Pros and Cons of Internet Bridal Gown Shopping

It is a growing trend among brides getting married to purchase their bridal gown, bridesmaids, and many accessories for their wedding on-line. Some to save money, others...because it is easier to search on-line than on-foot.
To our frustration in the bridal salon, we spend hours upon hours of time with these customers who have no intention on purchasing these items in our store, but rather spending their money with someone selling the same item or something similar and disguising it as the real thing with whom they have never even met.
What is mind blowing for us in the bridal industry is that you are paying them upfront for the item before you even see it and in our bridal salon you can see, feel, touch and confirm what you are going to be receiving and we only require a 50% deposit before you are able to see, feel and touch your item when it arrives.

Here are a few tips on ordering anything for your wedding on-line.

1. Make sure it is a reputable company (make sure they have a mailing address, and working telephone number...not just an e-mail address and website).
2. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. If there is a bridal gown retailing at every store around you for $1000 and you find it online for $700, chances are it is either worn, a damaged sample or a knock off using less than flaterring fabric, beading, not to mention the poor workmanship of making the gown.
3. Don't go shopping in your local bridal salons to try on the gowns, that is rude to the people working to help you look your best. Don't ask for swatches or to see the gowns in person. We carry the gown as a sample for a reason, for customers to see it, if you have no intention on being a customer, then the gown isn't for you to see or try on.
4. Always have a back-up plan if it doesn't work out for you.
5. Don't expect the professionals to pick-up the pieces after it doesn't work out for you, remember you have already wasted our time with your efforts to find the right gown in our store to purchase a knock-off from someone else.
6. While there are many reviews on-line on several different sites, remember that anyone can post those reviews, whether good, bad, or ugly (we have fallen victim to this as many stores do with competitors sabotoging other stores). The only place for reputable reviews is from the BBB. Always check with them to find out about grievances with the company, these are for actual customers to voice their complaints about the company you are will potentially be dealing with for aproximately a year.
7. Help out your local economy, by supporting your local business, you put jobs in your own backyard, not somewhere else.

To Veil or Not to Veil...that is the question

• Flyaway: This super short style, which hits just above the shoulder, will give you a playful, flirty look. It's most appropriate for daytime weddings and looks best with a simple gown with clean lines, a mini-dress, or a wedding suit. Most are very full and very bridal looking.

• Elbow-length: As the name implies, this veil reaches just to your elbow. It's a sweet, simple style that can work with virtually any wedding gown, although you should pick something a bit longer for a formal evening wedding. This veil length is great for petite brides.

• Fingertip: A veil that falls to your fingertips when your arms lie straight along your sides, this length is perfect for the indecisive bride -- it's dressier than shorter styles but doesn't have all the drama of longer ones.

• Waltz: This type of veil falls between your knees and ankles and, unlike longer veils, it allows you to dance with ease.

• Chapel: A veil that reaches to the floor and extends up to three feet past your hem falls into this category. It's a romantic look that's been growing in popularity for the past few years.

• Cathedral: Think Princess Diana -- yards of tulle extending down the aisle behind you. This is the choice of brides who want to feel like royalty, but keep in mind that it's not a low-maintenance look. You'll need at least one bridesmaid or flower girl to tend to your veil as you enter and exit the ceremony. It looks most appropriate in a grand church or other house of worship, and works only if the aisle you're walking down is a long one.

Dress to Impress...picking your bridal gown color

Picking a dress color can be difficult but the best way to decide which color to choose is your skin tone.

For dark skin tones, white looks great, as does almost any color.

For medium with yellow undertones, pick a dress in off-white to creamy yellow-ivory.

For fair skin with pink undertones, pick an ivory dress.

For medium with yellow-olive undertones, pick a dress in champagne or diamond white.

If none of these suit your needs, pick a dress in a color. Many dresses now are in pinks and blues.

Quick Fixes for your wedding day blunders

It’s your big day and your getting ready to walk down the aisle and you notice a water mark on the front of your dress. What do you do? Panic? Not if you are prepared! Read these tips to know how to handle a potential dress problem.

Water marks: Don’t use a blow dryer! That can cause the stain to spread. Instead use a white towel to blot the excess water. Then use a hand steamer to lift the stain out.

Ink Stain: Use a cotton ball with some hair spray on it and rub lightly on the stain.

Make-up marks: Press club soda into the stain with a cotton ball and use a towel to soak up excess moisture. If the stain is still visible, use chalk or talc to cover it.

Oil stain: Dip a Q-tip into talcum powder or cornstarch and generously put on stain. Wait 15 minutes then dust off the powder with a white towel.

Blood: Easiest to remove before it sets, wet a q-tip with your own saliva and blot on the spot.

Bustle Breakdown: Use extra-large safety pins to hold up a bustle that has broken.

An under-bustle is when the train is pulled under the dress. This is the strongest type of bustle.

An over-bustle is attaching the train to the waist of the dress, usually with hooks and eyes. This bustle

Tips for Attending a trunk show

It's not a fashion show. It's not for every bride. But it may be where you find the dress of your dreams. Here is what you need to know before you go.

What is a trunk show?
A trunk show is a limited time opportunity to view, select and purchase a bridal gown from a designer's collection. Since shops can't carry every designer's entire line, trunk shows offer brides the chance to see a larger selection from a certain designer.

What should you expect?
Trunk shows offer the opportunity to see many gowns from one designer at onece, so expect that you will need an appointment. Call the store ahead of time to schedule a time.
If you find a gown you like but want to have minor changes made to it, you can talk with the rconsultant and have the designer make the changes. Maybe you want a higher neckline or you need to adjust the waist slightly. This is the chance to take a dress and make it a more perfect gown for you, by seeing something similar with the entire line available to you. You should expect to buy a dress. Trunk show gowns don't stay at the store. When the show is over, usually after two or three days, the dresses move on to another city and another show. There is no opportunity to come back and try on the dress. If your grandmother is paying for the dress and wants to be involved with the selection, bring her to the trunk show. You only have a limited amount of time and you need to be ready and willing to make a decision. You never know when you'll find the dress of your dreams.
Expect to try on gowns. Don't roll out of bed and show up at the shop. You want to look radiant in your gown on your wedding day, so put a little effort into shopping. Do your hair and put on makeup. Wear appropriate undergarments. If you have a strapless bra, bring it along. More than likely you won't have the shoes you plan to wear with your gown, but bring shoes that reflect the heel height you plan to wear.
Who should go?
A trunk show should never be your first time looking at gowns. Trunk shows are for the more serious bride who is interested in a particular designer. You need to know your budget, your style and the designer you like. Hitting every trunk show will drive you crazy. You are better off doing your research before you go to a trunk show. Find the designers you like and decide on a price range. Trunk shows are for brides who are prepared to buy a wedding dress. If you already have taken the time to look at dresses and have identified designers who you like, then you should go to a trunk show. Be sure to make an appointment and be prepared with questions for the consultant. You need to be serious about buying. It is an opportunity to see an entire collection that was not purchased by a bridal salon. When the trunk show closes the dresses leave and they aren't coming back. You need to be ready to buy.
Who shouldn't go?
Don't come in if you haven't been looking at dresses yet. The trunk show will just be confusing. Don't go to a trunk show until you know your budget and match it with an appropriate designer. If you are on a $5000 budget you won't be happy with a trunk show featuring $500 gowns. And if you are on a $500 budget you are wasting your time going to see a designer whose dresses are $5000. Don't go just for fun with your friends. Appointments are limited, so don't take one from a bride who has her heart set on a gown from a particular designer. Look through some bridal magazines, visit some local bridal shops and get a good idea of the type of dress you want. Then take a look at our schedule of area trunk shows. The dress of your dreams awaits.

After being gone since before Christmas to have my first baby, I am now ready to come back to work and doing so, I have been doing some checking on our company...to my surprise, there are alot of angry customers out there at us...and I would just like to clarify some of these instances for you all researching us, as there are 2 sides to every story and you never get to hear ours.

I made an appointment with this shop 1 MONTH in advance as I was flying in from out of town. The ownwers NEVER showed up!! My day was ruined. Thank god the Elegant Bride in Edwardsville was open AND available for me that day. NEVER USE THIS SALON! It will make ur wedding a nightmare... Trust me

Well, she is right we didn't open up that day...despite what you may all think, the owner was in the urgicare because she was so sick she couldn't hear and my neice was rushed to children's hospital because she stopped breathing. So, yes, technically we were not there but I think you can all understand why we thought that our own personal lives (yes we have them) were a little more pressing than that of a girl looking for a bridal gown. By the way, she was called the next day and this was her response from our e-mail:

Hello:

I just received your voice mail, and I cannot tell you how terrible I feel for being so RUDE. I was in the heat of the moment and thinking only of myself. Once I calmed down, I did wonder if there was something bigger going on. I am praying for your family. I hope to have children someday, and I can't imagine how awful this is for you. I hope that you can look past my behavior on the telephone, yet I am sure you can understand how I was feeling at that moment. Thank you for your call. Again, I am praying for your grand daughter.

Cutomer Service Nightmare
I have never recieved worse customer service in my life. My daughter is getting married and we work trying on dresses (bridesmaids, mother of the bride/groom and flower girl) at this store and we were told that they had other appointments and we could not look. There were 4 sales people there and NO other customers on a Saturday morning. (I wonder why???) There are many other bridal shops who will be glad to help us. This will be one of the most important days of her life and I would not want it to be tainted by having to endure this rude treatment during the planning. It will turn out perfect without their help!!!

Okay, I love this one, this is from a girl named Danielle, she had been in our store looking for bridal gowns about 4 times and brought her girlfriends in to see the gown and we found out she bought is for less somewhere else, but she was continuing to come see us, fine, she said she would get her bridesmaids from us, after 4 sessions with bridesmaids, they left the store again and brought back later that day the flower girls, after spending close to 15 hours with this bride and making no money we had to do something so we asked them if they were purchasing or not because we had already invested more time in their group than we would have made off of any purchase they could have made with us, they stormed out...guess they thought we were their closet?

The customer service was HORRIBLE! They pressure you to buy a dress and make you feel bad for looking around. They do not care about making this experience fun or exciting. I would NOT recommend this bridal shop to anyone.

This one is funny to me too. I have never pressured anyone to purchase a gown, nor do we tell our consultants to pressure anyone into purchasing a gown, we know that brides look around. For the experience to be fund and exciting you also have to want that as well, some brides just want to cut to the chase and others fight with everyone they bring...I wish I knew which customer this was so I can tell you exactly what happened, but trust me, we do not hold them hostage at the counter until they purchase their gown.

My sister used this company for her bridesmaids dresses....they were way overpriced. Measured some of the bridesmaids wrong; therefore, 2 of the bridesmaids dresses were way too big. Adjustments had to "rigged" the day of the wedding. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BRIDAL SHOP. The service was absolutely horrible on top of it.‎

Oh, this one is nice too...So this group came in over the summer I would say July for an October wedding, there were I think7-8 bridesmaids and 2 junior bridesmaids and a flower girl. They were told upfront that there would be a rush charge on each gown to get them here in time. This was $40 automatic. They were the ones who picked their gowns and there were all measured appropriately, we went over the size chart with them and they signed off on their orders, this was no fault of ours. All gowns need tailoring and they know this. I am assuming they are just mad because each girl had to spend over $250 per gown to get in and in the color the bride wanted (platnium). Our service was never horrible, we always knew them by name and everything was always fine until 2 days before the wedding when the Mother of the Bride came storming in our store at closing complaning about the price of alterations (not done by us) on a junior bridesmaid dress. The funny part is before putting their signatures on anything, they were all presented with the prices, so for them to call us overpriced seems very unfair since all of our gowns are listed at MSRP.

This place was horrific!!!! There are numerous signs that state "NO" this and "NO" that. Not a single employee even knew how to smile. Also, this place requires that one of their associates is present in the room when the bride-to-be is half naked trying on dresses. This is the only place, out of like 15, that we have been to in the Metro-East, that refused to allow the Bride's Mother and Maid-of-Honor to assist the bride while trying on dresses. The dresses were also very dingy looking.‎

All I can say is, this girl was a terrible customer to deal with, after complaning about having a consultant work with her and put her in our gowns (by the way she called our consultant a lesbian for trying to work with her and put her in the gowns) she was allowed to be dressed by her mother and maid of honor. She was left alone and after storming out of our store, we went back to the dressing room to put away the dresses she was trying on, and we found a veil that was torn to shreds by her...this is why we have consultants working with you.
By the way, nothing is dingy in our store. I am pretty sure she got mad because we called her and let her know that we had surveillance of her tearning the veil on purpose. Also, we do have signs up stating that there is NO food or drink allowed in the bridal salon for obvious purposes!

So, sufficit to say, I can't wait to come back to all of the brides who are always so pleasant to deal with on a daily basis. But really, I just wanted to make sure that all of these comments about us were addressed since their is no way we can rebutt these remarks made about us.
I think that our BBB rating speaks for itself since it is more accredited than people just bored and mad at the world.

For some reason, girls don't like to make appointments to try on dresses. Please fill us in as to why. Most girls have to call atleast 5 people to come with them to try on the dresses, why can't they call us to see if we have availability and a consultant to work with you. We cannot be everywhere and do everything.
Sufficit to say, make an appointment. Don't drop in to "look" at wedding gowns. Nobody "looks" at wedding gowns, you have to try them on. Also, your friends, can't tell you the specifics on each gown nor can they tell you the changes that can be made or the colors that it is available in, that is why we have staff here to assist you.

I know I am cutting and pasting, but I feel the need to revisit this subject again...

I can't stress how important appointments are in the wedding industry, especially in bridal. Please call ahead and book your appointment. If we do not know you are coming, we have other brides we are working with and other things to do in our store. We are always doing something, we rarely take a break, let alone eat a lunch.
Appoinments for Bridal Salons are important for these reasons.
1. To make sure a consultant is available to work with you. Our salon always has a consultant working with our brides, bridesmaids, mothers, grooms (for their tuxedoes), flower girls, etc. This is due to placing you in the appropriate styles, checking on colors available for the gowns, measuring and ordering.
2. To make sure there is a dressing room available for you. If we have all of our dressing rooms booked and all of our consultants are booked you will not be allowed access to our bridal salon.
3. There is no such thing as looking when it comes to bridal, bridesmaids, etc....You always need to try a dress on.

These are just some of the very important reasons to make sure the bridal salon knows you are coming.
Also, please make sure you are on time for your appointment, if you are not, it will cause a huge back-up for our customers and it makes it a very uncomfortable experience when we have to cut your appointment short because you were late.

As many of you know we are a family owned and operated business. Unfortunately, our dear mother and grandmother has passed away suddenly due to a severe Leukemia. We will need to be closed starting Wednesday at 1 p.m. and all day on Thursday. We will reopen on Friday.

What about if I am a plus size bride?

There are thousands of plus-size brides out there that share your same concerns and feel challenged when trying to select a wedding gown. I'm sure that one of the most frustrating obstacles you are facing is the fact that most gowns carried in a bridal salon are sampled in a size 10.The first piece of advice I have to give you is to be careful of taking too much advice. Remember that most advice you will get are simply "guidelines" to use when searching for a dress, but you will never be 100% sure of how a gown looks on you until you try it on your body! Which is easier said than done considering you have to purchase a gown that is shown in the wrong size. Being plus-size shouldn't be the only factor you consider when choosing a gown.I think that the silhouette is more important than size! Are you tall or petite?Are you busty? Do you have large hips? Do you have a thick mid-section?You also need to consider the type of wedding you are having. Is it formal or informal? Is your ceremony or reception indoor or outdoor?Here are a few of my guidelines, suggestions, and some of my favorite gowns for fuller figures:

I feel that heavy fabrics can sometimes make the person look even heavier, so I generally prefer to choose gowns that are made of lighter fabrics.Here is a Watters gown in a silk satin with beautiful lace overlay: It has a soft sweetheart neckline and a pretty A-line silhouette, which is flattering to most body types. Because it's light and has lace, I think it would look perfect in a garden setting.

These 2 gowns by Watters Bridal have rouching which can be very forgiving when trying to conceal a thick waistline, and an A-line silhouette which is good for accommodating fuller hips. Both are made of silk shantung, which is a very lightweight fabric.

This next dress by Watters Bridal, also a rouched silk shantung, rests at the tip of the shoulder, which can give the appearance of broader shoulders and in turn can balance out fuller hips.

Jim Hjelm even offers bridal gowns up to size 28 (as do most designers) and can even custom size the gown for women. This is a strapless silk satin gown with a sweetheart neckline. It will give you that "Jessica Rabbit" look every woman wants.

We feel at the Blushing Bride that no matter how different your body type is, we can have the right dress for you if you let us work with you. However, we may not have a plus-size sample of every gown I've featured here or even a lot of plus sizes in our salon. But don't be overwhelmed by your size; Remember, every bride has the same challenge of finding the perfect dress, and if you ever wish to come into Blushing Bride, I would be more than happy to help you choose a gown that you will LOVE, and that will look GORGEOUS on you!

Bridal Gowns

Recently it has come to our attention that we are loosing brides to other stores in the area.
Perplexed to why this is happening, we asked ourselves why, we couldn't figure it out, we moved into a brand new location that is beautiful, we have over 300 bridal gowns to choose from and we list our gowns at the lowest price we are able to do so by each of the designers.
We can't figure it out, so we asked a few of you and here is what we found out...

Some of you have found a completly different dress that we either don't have in our store, but are able to order for you or we don't have that designer in our store.
Our solution, we are working on adding more of what you are looking for in our store, please always let us know if there is something that you would like to see from us, we are always willing to hear suggestions.

The other reason, and this bothers us. We have found the right dress for you and you still continue to look but bought the same gown we spent 2 hours + finding and working with you but you bought it from another store.
So, we have asked and found that some stores in our area are undercutting us.
We know they are doing this because, we price our gowns at MSRP directly from the maufacturer, per our contract agreement with them. But some of the other stores in the area (i.e. Clarice's Bridal, among others) are selling dresses below MSRP. So our solution to this is turning them in for not following the rules set forth by the manufacturer. Well guess what, they still continue to do this and here is what we are doing in retaliation, we are beating their price by 5%. So, if you get a price from any St. Louis Metro Area bridal salon that is lower than ours, please bring it in and we will continue to turn in these bridal salons that continue to not follow the rules and bring them to justice, but give you the discount as well for continuing to support our business!

We all know that we are in the midst of an economic crisis, but if you find your gown at our store, please let us know that you got a quote from someone else that was lower, we do not want to loose your busisness.

Appointments

I can't stress how important appointments are in the wedding industry, especially in bridal. Please call ahead and book your appointment. If we do not know you are coming, we have other brides we are working with and other things to do in our store. We are always doing something, we rarely take a break, let alone eat a lunch.
Appoinments for Bridal Salons are important for these reasons.
1. To make sure a consultant is available to work with you. Our salon always has a consultant working with our brides, bridesmaids, mothers, grooms (for their tuxedoes), flower girls, etc. This is due to placing you in the appropriate styles, checking on colors available for the gowns, measuring and ordering.
2. To make sure there is a dressing room available for you. If we have all of our dressing rooms booked and all of our consultants are booked you will not be allowed access to our bridal salon.
3. There is no such thing as looking when it comes to bridal, bridesmaids, etc....You always need to try a dress on.

These are just some of the very important reasons to make sure the bridal salon knows you are coming.
Also, please make sure you are on time for your appointment, if you are not, it will cause a huge back-up for our customers and it makes it a very uncomfortable experience when we have to cut your appointment short because you were late.

How to Find Your Perfect Dress

Now that you are planning your perfect wedding…you’ve got your perfect husband-to-be, your perfect diamond ring, and even your perfect venue where you’re perfect day will be held. There’s only one perfect problem…how are you suppose to find your dream dress in all of this wedding hoo-hah? Many brides wonder how to get started and for that matter what is the proper etiquette to go about picking that perfect gown.
First thing is first, be realistic and open-minded. What looks good on a model may not flatter your figure. Choose a gown that hides your flaws and plays up to your best features. Next, get recommendations and listen to what friends and brides in your area have to say about area salons. Also, schedule appointments some salons allow walk-ins, but by booking an appointment you are ensuring that a consultant has time to help you. When you do go to these appointments remember that money does matter and always be honest with your consultant about how much you would actually like to spend. Be up front about it because you will only create heart break when trying on a dress you love, but can’t afford.
Bring inspiration to your appointment with heels, makeup, and styling your hair to look the part. This way you can create the illusion of what you might look like on your Big Day. Also, keep in mind on who to bring with you when you’re trying on gowns. Bringing a crowd of people with you to the salons are not necessary and can be inconvenient to you and to salon owners for seating. Two people is plenty, maybe your mom and a close friend any more will make decision-making stressful and difficult. Last but not least is sleep on it. There’s no need to make a quick decision right away. Many salons won’t allow returns so ensuring that this is the dress should be well thought out.

There is no magic dress

What bridesmaids’ dress will look good on all of my girls, they either small or bigger in sizes? Do you have anything for them to try on?

I tell each and every one of our brides, there is no magic dress, your size 0 bridesmaid will look like a size 0. Your size 20 bridesmaid will look like a size 20.
Remember this is your day and while you would like for them to be comfortable in something that they are wearing, remember it comes down to your decision. Brides are better off by giving the bridesmaids a clear direction of what she would like them to wear. It gets confusing and tiresome for the bridesmaids involved if you don’t care.
While some salons have left over sizes from never paid for items from other weddings, all salons generally have sizes 8-14 available as samples. We all realize it is difficult to see what it will look like on a smaller or larger girl, but it is all that is available to independent bridal salons and what we are able to work with.

“When do I HAVE TO BUY IT?”
An easy rule of thumb is to purchase when you find it, don’t wait too long to start searching, you will run into extra charges for rush delivery. All special occasion gowns are made to order and are not sitting in a warehouse awaiting you to purchase. Here is an easy guide for your attire purchases.
Wedding Gowns : 12 -9 months start the search. Purchase at least 6 months from the “Big Day”.
Bridesmaids Dresses : 9 months start the search after you find your gown; make sure their dresses compliment yours, not the other way around. (Purchase them about 7 months from the “Big Day”) Your bridesmaids will appreciate not having to pay for a ton of things at the last minute.
Mothers Gowns : 9 months start the search. (Purchase 6-7 months before the “Big Day”). This will leave you a few months to loose the weight you want.
Flower Girl Dresses : 6 months start the search. (Purchase 5 months before the “Big Day”). Make sure you select a size that will accommodate a sudden growth spurt.

If you follow this simple guideline buying the attire you need for your wedding will be a breeze and arrive in plenty of time for alterations and so you don't have that nervous break down that your dress won't be here in time.

"The Dress"

One of the most common questions we are asked is: “How do you know when it is ‘The Dress’?”
My answer is always – “It depends”.
It depends on who you are: some brides need the reassurance of others that it is “The Dress”. Others know right away, some need a night or two weeks to think it over, some cry; some are so frustrated that she picks the first one that fits.
Regardless, the best advice I can give on this subject is to, RELAX, have fun and don’t worry about finding “THE DRESS”. There are no ugly wedding gowns, or brides for that matter, on a wedding day, only beautiful brides glowing because of their happiness.
